Garuda Carrying Vishnu – A beautifully carved sculpture standing inside the Taman Ayun Temple

Garuda Carrying Vishnu
This finely-carved sculpture depicts Garuda, a mythical eagle-like bird, carrying Vishnu, one of the Hindu Trinity. With Vishnu on his shoulders covered by his wings spread wide, Garuda appears to be flying.

As you can see from the image, Garuda is portrayed with a human-like body and bird-like face, which has a beak and wide eyes, and legs, which has talons. Garuda is holding Vishu’s legs tightly with his human-like hands, and Vishnu is holding his signature weapon Sudarshana Chakra (a disc-like object) with his right hand. Adorning Vishnu’s head is a finely carved mukuta (crown). Both Vishnu and Garuda are wearing beautiful jewelry on their bodies.

The Vishnu on Garuda sculpture is situated in the Taman Ayun Temple complex in Bali, Indonesia, built by the Raja of Mengwi in 1634 and is dedicated to Vishnu. The architecture of this temple is a blend of Cambodian and Bali styles. Unlike the other temples of Bali, this temple has a wide prakara (protective wall surrounding the temple) and a moat. Because it is located in the Mengwi district of Bali, Taman Ayun is also known as the Mengwi Temple.
