This intricately carved story panel with three frames is one of the most beautiful bas-reliefs in Prambanan located 11 miles northeast of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. At the center is Lokapala (means guardian of the world in Sanskrit) sitting on a beautifully decorated throne. With his eyes closed and right hand holding an akshaamala (prayer beads), he appears to be is in a state of deep meditation.
To the left and right of Lokapala are the frames with the sculptural relief of three figures – most likely demigods – engaged in some activities, perhaps debating or teaching.
Although Prambanan is a Hindu temple complex, a strong Buddhist influence is seen in this relief.
