The Hobbiton Movie Set is where the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie series were filmed, and was it was created by their director Peter Jackson. The movie set became a huge tourist attraction after it was made a permanent feature in this location in 2010.

There are day tours both for Auckland and Rotorua to this place.  It takes about 2 hours to visit the set.

Location

The Hobbiton Movie Set is situated on a private farm 6 miles southwest of Matamata in the Waikato farming region of New Zealand.

It is 106  miles south of Auckland and 44 mile north of Rotorua.

Hobbit Holes

In the fictional novels written by J R R  Tolkien, Hobbits are a fictional diminutive race that inhabited the Middle Earth in ancient times.  They lived in holes in the ground called Smials, also known as Hobbit Holes. The Hobbiton Movie Set has 17 hobbit hole facades. One of the interesting ones is Bag End,  which in the movie series is the home of the Baggins family for three generations, including Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
