Scenic Oia Village
The image shows a scenic view of the Oia Village located on the island of Santorini, Greece. The buildings are situated on the slope of a cliff that used to be part of an ancient caldera. Notice the cave-like structures surrounded by the buildings painted white and yellow. These are cave houses built over the centuries by the crews of the ships and families who could not afford houses on the top of the cliff.

The traditional cave house is typically a single room residential unit built on the slopes of the caldera by carving out the earth from the cliff. Because of the igneous rocks that made up the caldera, these houses are warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Now some of these houses are converted into vacation homes for tourists.
