Belur Chennakeshava Temple: Mango plucking Madanike

Mango plucking Madanike - A bracket figure mounterd on the exterior wall of the Belur Chennakeshava Temple in Karnataka, India

Mango plucking Madanike

Madanike plucking a mango
As you can see from the image, this beautifully carved madanike (also known as shilābālike) with an elegant stance is plucking a mango with her right hand. Unlike many other bracket figures, she neither a dancer nor a singer because of her stance and the lack of accompanying figures, typically placed at the bottom playing instruments. It appears that she is just a beautiful lady collecting fruits.

The base on which this bracket figure stands has an inscription written in the Halegannada (Old Kannada) script describing the sculptor, most likely inscribed by the sculptor himself. It is mounted on a pedestal carved with three layers of lotus flower petals.

This shilābālike is one of the 38 sculptures, known as bracket figures, mounted on the exterior wall surrounding the navaranga (front portion of the temple). Each figure is attached to a bracket placed at an angle just below the eaves of the temple. The base of the sculpture is mounted on the side of a pillar just below its capital.
This shilābālike is on a corner pillar at the junction of the 6th and 7th section of the navaranga exterior wall. She is figure number 16 in the navaraga layout.
